Leading Causes of Death

Diseases and injuries cost the lives of hundreds of thousands of Americans each year. Here, we present the 15 leading causes of death - both diseases and injuries are represented - and the absolute number of deaths attributed to each cause. The graphic here represents the total number of American deaths from all causes in 2002 - 2,443,387.

Click the menu tabs at right, and the section of the graphic equivalent to 500,000 deaths expands so that the relative size of each cause can be clearly demonstrated. The accompanying text presents links to other websites for more in-depth information.

Explore the other Riskometer page, Exposures, by pressing the menu button at top. Or visit the Risk Rings, and the Data pages.
